The Voice of the Rail Commuter

incorporating Eastbourne and Worthing commuters

Welcome to our web page.

Brighton Line Commuters was set up in early 1985. At that time the group was called Brighton Based Commuters and was set up by users of the buffet cars.  Shortly after, we re-launched the group to give all users of the Brighton line the opportunity to join the membership. It was also at that time that following a member's suggestion we renamed the group Brighton Line Commuters.

Subsequently one of our Hove members who commuted with passengers who used rail services from Worthing asked if we would extend the area we covered to take in the Worthing line trains and a short while later we were asked by Eastbourne Council at the request of some Eastbourne rail passengers to extend our group to cover the Eastbourne line as well. To this day we still have members from all three lines.

We also now look after bus and taxi issues for our members.

Our committee have regular dialogue with the train operating companies.  We take up all issues in relation to train travel and have in the past been successful in securing the reinstatement and re-timing of services, reinstatement of station stops, improvements to certain safety issues such as securing platform changes, and have also dealt with problems at station retail outlets, station taxi ranks, bus companies which serve the stations (in this respect we have also been successful in securing timetables changes), and have contact with Network Rail, the British Transport Police, local MP's and local Councils.

We have direct contact numbers and access to senior and local management on a daily basis as necessary.  We receive advance notification of timetable changes at consultation stage and send regular updates from the train companies to our members.

We update members regularly by e-mail (and by post to postal members), on all issues we take up with the rail companies.

We are a voluntary rail user group, and receive no government funding. The group is funded exclusively by membership subscription.

Finally, all of us on the Committee are fully paid up members of Brighton Line Commuters.
